BRAMPTON - Peel District School Board staff and students have raised nearly $12,000 to help individuals and families affected by last month's three separate natural disasters in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to UNICEF, these disasters have affected millions of people and caused death, widespread flooding and destruction.
"Our students, staff and families are always quick to respond when disaster strikes in other areas of the world," says Janet McDougald, chair of the Peel board. "It's inspiring to watch young people motivated to make a difference on a global scale and help their peers."
The board kicked off its voluntary campaign in support of UNICEF's emergency appeal on Oct. 14.
The day was designated as Toonie Wednesday to Send Hope. The funds gathered will support the delivery of hygiene kits, essential medicines, water purification tablets, portable toilets and family kits containing blankets and soap.
