New bylaw would stop intersection clogs

BRAMPTON - City councillors are expected to approve a bylaw Monday that will make it illegal to block any of Brampton's signalized intersections with a vehicle.
Many municipalities already have a bylaw in place, and it is already illegal at all signalized intersections in the city under the jurisdiction of the Region of Peel.
But it became an issue for the city at the downtown intersection of George Street and Queen Street West, where traffic routinely backs up into the intersection, clogging cross traffic.
Under the new bylaw, tentatively approved by Committee of Council Wednesday, motorists are banned from entering an intersection if they don't think they can make it all the way through before the traffic signal turns red
Some councillors expressed surprise at Wednesday's meeting, saying they thought it was already deemed illegal under the Highway Traffic Act.
However, according to city traffic staff, the act requires a municipality to pass a bylaw making it illegal. Police officers would then enforce it.
If the bylaw is officially approved Monday, signs will go up Queen and George and any other problem intersections in the city, councillors were told. The city will also attempt to get the word out to motorists as soon as it is official.
