Accessibility plans finding obstacles at school board Friday July 3 2009

While Queen’s Park intensifies efforts towards making Ontario barrier-free for the disabled, Peel’s public school board is trying hard not to lose focus on achieving the government’s goal.

Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, the province is aiming to make the province accessible for people with disabilities, by 2025, through various standards for the public and private sector. The act was passed into law June 2005 and is being implemented in stages.

Public sector organizations will have to comply with the first standard, related to customer service, by 2010. School boards and others will have to establish policies, practices and procedures on providing goods or services to people with disabilities. The private sector has until 2012.

Man gets six years for abducting children Thursday July 2 2009

A man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping two young Brampton children for ransom last year.

Manish Sharma, 27, has four years left to serve on that sentence after he was credited for the time he has spent in pre-trial custody. He was sentenced June 23 and is expected to be deported to India after serving his sentence.

Sharma had just come to Canada and moved in with a local family in May 2008 while he looked for work and got settled. A mutual acquaintance in India had arranged it, and the couple had similar help when they came to Canada, so they said they were happy to open their home to him.

For two weeks the two children, aged 6 and 4 at the time, called him “uncle”.
