Region to recognize persons with disabilities on Dec. 3 Friday November 28 2008

A society's success is measured, in part, by how readily accessible things like education, medicine and employment are to people.

But many in Canada, and around the world, struggle everyday to maneuver around what most take for granted.

Entering a bank, riding an elevator and even getting from one end of a city to the other can be a real challenge for people living with disabilities.

For years, the disabled have fought hard for inclusiveness and to be given the opportunity to fully participate in society.

To help mark that struggle, the region will recognize Dec. 3 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) in Peel.

This day coincides with the United Nations-recognized IDPD, which aims to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well being of persons with disabilities.

User fee increases up for debate this week Friday November 28 2008

Whether or not to phase in a 20 per cent hike in fitness membership costs at Brampton's four neighbourhood recreation centres will be a discussion reserved for next week's budget talks, councillors have decided.

The possibility of limiting or eliminating the increase on memberships for seniors will also be discussed, councillors agreed at last week's council meeting.

The issue was raised by City Councillor Sandra Hames who pointed out that a 20 per cent increase is a lot all at once.

However, it was stressed that council was not considering "backing off" the 20 per cent increase, just looking at ways to soften the blow.

The increase applies to four recreation facilities considered "neighbourhood" centres- Loafer's Lake, Earnscliffe, Century Gardens and Howden.
