BRAMPTON - Peel police are looking for a man claiming to be a police officer who pulled over a car on Chinguacousy Road Sunday afternoon and threatened to jail the driver if he didn't hand over cash.

The 41-year-old victim, a Brampton resident, was driving near Queen Street at 2:30 p.m. when a man behind him in a newer model Jeep Cherokee motioned him to stop.

He did, and the driver of the Jeep approached his window and identified himself as a police officer- without naming a police service- by quickly flipping his wallet open and closed. He was not wearing any kind of uniform.

Police say the motorist was told his vehicle was going to be seized and he would be taken to jail.

The driver asked the "officer" for a second chance, so the man demanded money. The victim turned over some cash, and was then told to stay where he was for 10 minutes while the imposter drove away. He was last seen travelling east on Queen Street.

The extortion suspect is described as South Asian, approximately 40 years old, 6-foot, with a medium build, short black hair with grey at the sides, a goatee and a dark complexion. He was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and a black leather jacket.

Police are looking for help in identifying a suspect. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone with information is asked to call 22 Division detectives at 905-453-3311, ext. 2233, or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Police remind residents who have reason to question the identity of a police officer to ask for further identification. Police officers all carry badges and a "warrant card" which has a photograph of the officer and identifying information.
