Remembrance Day should be a holiday

I would like to know why only government employees get the privilege of remembering our war veterans by getting the day off as a stat holiday.
I find this extremely upsetting to know that the general public are not allowed to celebrate this day as a statutory holiday.
Both my grandfather and father are war veterans and when I was a child I remember all schools, business, etc, were closed so we could remember our war heroes and honour them as they should be.
As our war veterans are slowly dying off, we need to make sure we educate our children on the meaning and the importance of remembering and honouring those who fought for our freedom.
I do not understand why other provinces celebrate this day and a few provinces have chosen not to recognize this date and its importance.
I have read a report done in 2006 by the Dominion Institute about Canadians’ attitude towards Remembrance Day and there was an overwhelming response of 87 per cent to have this day recognized as a national holiday.
My question is why shouldn’t our war veterans be honoured by all Canadians and not only a select few who happen to work for a government institution?
