Money must be put into people’s pockets

As our federal and provincial governments ponder how to prevent a further downward spiral in the economy, decisive action must be taken and pragmatic solutions found to stimulate our faltering economy.
The Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) calls upon both levels of government to heed the advice of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, to give priority to “putting money into people’s pockets”.
Strauss-Kahn points out that directing this fiscal stimulus to low-income people and strengthening the social safety nets are the fastest ways to boost the economy.
Though useful, infrastructure spending simply takes too long to achieve the desired goal.
Delaying action has both human and fiscal long-term implications on the physical, mental and social well-being of Ontarians and Canadians.
