BRAMPTON - It was a day full of flowers, marching bands, sword fights and food celebrating the kick off of summer in downtown Brampton Saturday.
People of all ages enjoyed a fun-filled day throughout Brampton’s core where there were many festivities for families to enjoy.
The day started off with the opening of the Farmers’ Market. Main Street was transformed into an outdoor marketplace where people enjoyed more than 40 vendors offering fresh-picked fruits, vegetables, and baked goods. The market runs every Saturday until October.
Another highlight was the opening of the new Chess Park located at Vivian Lane. Children and adults enjoyed Brampton’s newest attraction as they played chess. Visitors must bring their own chess pieces. The morning started off with some entertainment including a mock sword fight.
Spectators were left astonished when chess player Hans Jung from Kitchener played three people at the same time while blind-folded. The winner of the game was Grade 8 student Saravanan Vaithianathan from William G. Davis Sr. Public School.
Also members of the Brampton Chess Club played a ‘simultaneous’ game where they play multiple people at the same time.
“It becomes a social setting where people can enjoy downtown,” said chess player and organizer of the event Barry Thorvardson.
The day ended with the Flower City Parade where local organizations and performers marched, danced or rode their way from Church Street, down to Main Street, ending south of Gage Park.
The parade opened with the Carabram float where people enjoyed the rhythms of the steel drums getting a glimpse of the upcoming Brampton multicultural festival Carabram which will take place in July.
Each float was covered with colourful flowers creating a perfect setting to welcome in the new season.
Other highlights of the parade included Brampton’s mascot Sassy the Squirrel which children enjoyed, acrobatic dancers, the Kawartha Drum Club, the Tian Guo Marching Band of Canada, stilt walkers, unicyclists and jugglers.
