Centre helps students find summer jobs

BRAMPTON - Recess bells fell silent across Brampton this week as schools let out for the summer holidays.
And while some look forward to lazy days in the sun, other students of working age will use the next few months to earn extra cash and gain valuable work experience.
For those looking for summer employment, the Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) office can help.  
“There are a lot of opportunities available for employment and we are always available to assist students with their job search,” said Amit Tandon, 20, SCCY youth service officer. “We pretty much provide the basics on how to start a career. A summer job is a great way to build up experience.”     
SCCYs assists students in their search for summer employment by connecting them with local employers and helping them get a foot in the door.
“We assist in writing resumes and cover letters and we help with job interview techniques,” Tandon said. “We also provide workshops on job search skills, health and safety regulations and labour laws.”
More than 300 positions were filled last summer and more than 160 jobs have been posted since May.
Tandon said there are a variety of jobs up for grabs including many in the food, construction and landscaping industries.
“There is an increase of job postings and vacancies compared to last year. There is also an increase in the amount of people dropping in to use our services,” Tandon said. “There are jobs in all types of industries.”
Brampton’s SCCY office is located at 18 Corporation Drive, in the area of Queen St. East and Torbram Road.  
Office hours run Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
