BRAMPTON - In a matter of weeks, a Brampton woman will be facing the music and moving to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, West Africa.
Kristin Deboer, 25, is a music aficionado. Her passion for music is contagious— when she sits down at a piano, you can’t help but be enveloped in her music and presence.
After studying since childhood, Deboer received her certificate as an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT). And, as the older sister of 10 siblings, she’s had plenty of practice being a music teacher.
Deboer will be living in Ouagadougou, for five months as a short-term missionary with the organization Serving in Mission (SIM). While there, she will teach music and help to develop a music program within a church. Deboer doesn’t know exactly what’s ahead of her, but knows she has to be flexible and possibly help by teaching English.
“I've seen different parts of the world but instead of sightseeing, I want to learn to live in the culture, get to know the people and make a difference in their lives in any way I can,” said Deboer.
However, in order to make her mission, she has to raise more than $10,000 to cover immunizations, a visa, travelling expenses and daily living costs.
To help raise the funds, a benefit concert featuring local artists will be held at Rexdale Alliance Church, 2459 Islington Ave., on Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and $10 for students. For tickets call 1-647-218-0026. All proceeds will support Deboer’s mission work in Africa.
