BRAMPTON - A group of Brampton police officers, firefighters and emergency service workers gathered at Loafer's Lake Recreation Centre last week to save lives.
They were donating blood as part of the Sirens for Life competition in Peel— a contest to see which department gives the most.
"This is a healthy competition, no pun intended," said Brian Scott, Division Chief for Brampton Fire and Emergency Services. Scott has donated his blood over 25 times throughout his lifetime and doesn't intend to slow down any time soon.
"It's one way to give back. I have a great life, so this is an opportunity to help others," he said.
According to Canadian Blood Services, each donation saves three lives. The Sirens for Life competition has been running since 2004.
Local residents also came out to donate to the clinic. "I've given blood 47 times," said Mary Hutchinson.
"It's easy, it takes an hour of my time and I know it saves lives."
Lilet Raffinan, Community Development Co-ordinator for Canadian Blood Services, is hoping to collect 2,000 units of blood by Sept. 1.
According to Raffinan, the need for blood increases during the summer months due to more accidents around the community. All blood types are accepted. Donors must be over the age of 17, have no tattoos or piercings in the last six months and be in good health.
