A society's success is measured, in part, by how readily accessible things like education, medicine and employment are to people.
But many in Canada, and around the world, struggle everyday to maneuver around what most take for granted.
Entering a bank, riding an elevator and even getting from one end of a city to the other can be a real challenge for people living with disabilities.
For years, the disabled have fought hard for inclusiveness and to be given the opportunity to fully participate in society.
To help mark that struggle, the region will recognize Dec. 3 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) in Peel.
This day coincides with the United Nations-recognized IDPD, which aims to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well being of persons with disabilities.
"By promoting awareness and addressing the needs of persons with disabilities in Peel, we create an inclusive and welcoming community for everyone who lives and works here," said Regional Chair, Emil Kolb. "Regional Council's proclamation of IDPD shows our continued support for both our citizens and Regional staff with disabilities and the issues that are important to them."
As part of IDPD day, a meeting will take place at Peel Region headquarters, 10 Peel Centre Dr., from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 2.
Members of the public, disability advocates, media and agencies providing human services are encouraged to attend this special meeting of the AAC.
The public can also listen to the meeting through live audio Web cast at

.
"IDPD is a great opportunity to celebrate our commitment to eliminate barriers and allow persons with disabilities to fully participate in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life," added William Goursky, Peel's Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) chair.
Region officials say the theme this year is "Dignity and justice for all of us", which stresse the importance of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities.
The event will focus on regional services and programs delivered to persons with disabilities.
Initiatives from the Region's Peel Living, Ontario Works, Children's Services and Accessibility Planning programs will be highlighted during the special meeting and panel discussion.
Information booths and displays will be set up to showcase products for accessible housing and universal design projects either currently underway or already completed in Peel, as well as human services offered by service agencies and the region.
The public is invited to attend the special meeting of the AAC featuring keynote speaker Shelly White, Chief Executive Officer of the United Way of Peel Region.
The AAC will also present accessibility awards to regional staff, whose efforts have improved accessibility to regional programs, services and facilities.
Those interested in attending the event are encouraged to register by Nov. 28.
To register, call 905-791-7800, ext. 4778.
Region officials advise that people identify any disability supports they may need to participate in this meeting.
Seats are limited and registration will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.
