A Brampton man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his 11-month-old son two years ago.
Garfield Anthony Sibblies, 38, pleaded guilty Friday afternoon. He will be back in court Feb. 9 for a sentencing hearing.
Sibblies was originally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Elijah Sibblies, who was not his biological son.
Sibblies called 9-1-1 the afternoon of March 22, 2006 and told emergency workers that Elijah was unconscious and had no vital signs. He was at home alone with the child at the time and had been most of the day, except when a repairman visited in the morning, court heard in an agreed statement of facts.
The family had just moved to the home on Amethyst Circle in the area of The Gore Road, north of Ebenezer Road. Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive the infant with CPR. He was pronounced dead at hospital.
The child had bruises and cuts around his mouth, bruises on his face and head, and there was evidence of brain damage caused by shaking, court was told. He also had bruises on his body and thighs.
