Woman attacked and murdered on Church Street
Monday December 1 2008
A 28-year-old Brampton man made a brief court appearance Tuesday morning, charged with first-degree murder in the sex attack and murder of a Brampton woman.

Christopher Hurd was remanded in custody. He is charged in the vicious weekend sex assault and killing of Loretta Lavalley, 36, who lived alone in a first-floor apartment building on Church Street.

Police responded to a 9-1-1 call from Lavalley at 12:04 a.m. Sunday, as she was being attacked and sexually assaulted by an intruder who broke in to her apartment.

Hurd was arrested at the scene. Lavalley was rushed to hospital where she died late Sunday.
Hurd had originally been charged with break and enter, aggravated sexual assault and forcible confinement. The charges were upgraded to first-degree murder in court Tuesday.

Lavalley had lived in the apartment, at Kennedy Road across from Central Peel Secondary School, for approximately three years.

The victim has been identified as Loretta Lavalley from Brampton.

This is Brampton’s 10th murder of the year, while Mississauga has experienced 16 homicides.
