BRAMPTON -
Mississauga – Members of the Peel Regional Police Airport Division, Criminal Investigation Bureau, are reminding members of the public who use Pearson International Airport to be alert to their surrounding. Investigators have detected an increase in distraction style thefts.
In recent months, seven distraction thieves have been arrested at Pearson International Airport and investigations are continuing on several other thefts. Distraction style thefts have thieves working in groups of two or three. One of the suspects will approach the victim, as the victim is occupied with using a telephone, loading bags, renting a car, checking in, or simply relaxing in a café. While the first suspect interacts with the victim, the other suspect(s) will steal the victim’s property.
The thieves will target briefcases, luggage, electronics (laptops, i-pods, PDA’s ), passports and any other item that a victim may lose sight of.
Passengers travelling through Pearson Airport are reminded to carry their valuables and bags with them at all times and to be alert if approached by any strangers. You may have been targeted for distraction by thieves. Be especially alert while checking-in, or when loading bags in or out of vehicles.
