BRAMPTON - BRAMPTON, ON. (Aug. 12, 2008) – A new GO Transit bus stop will be set up and operational on Aug. 18, bringing service into the heart of downtown Bolton. The Region of Peel has worked with the Town of Caledon and GO Transit in establishing the latest bus stop for convenient access to inter-municipal transit. Present GO service stops are located on the perimeter parts of Bolton. The new stop is located on Highway 50 (Queen Street North), north of King Street (near Mill Street). Southbound trips are destined to the Malton GO Station connecting with the Georgetown GO Train service.
“Having access to transit will allow residents to leave their vehicle at home,” said Caledon Mayor Marolyn Morrison. “This will result in fewer greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions and a healthier community. Given Caledon’s environmental commitments, we feel this is a win-win for our environment and community.”
“The Region works hard to support public transit improvements and this includes accommodating residents who wish to travel out of region for work, school or other activities,” said Emil Kolb, Regional Chair for the Region of Peel. “Bolton residents will now have a more convenient access to GO Bus service, minimizing the need to drive and park at the GO Train station.”
“Ridership on the Bolton GO Bus route has increased by about 40 per cent since this time last year, and it’s great to be growing along with this region,” said GO Transit Managing Director Gary McNeil. “We’re always looking for opportunities to give people more transit options.”
“The new GO Bus stop is located in Bolton’s core which will provide convenience for nearby residents and businesses,” said Regional Councillor Annette Groves. “GO is an important link for the people of Bolton and having public transit provides residents a handy option over their cars for travel.”
The Region anticipates many more transit improvements under MoveOntario 2020, an ambitious Provincial transit vision that will see the largest transit investment in Canadian history. MoveOntario 2020 includes new rapid transit and rail lines, including future GO rail service to Bolton. GO Transit has initiated the planning process for this new service. The Region is doing its part with a planned GO Bus station and carpool lot at Mayfield Road and Highway 50 - construction to begin late 2008.
The Regional Municipality of Peel was incorporated in 1974 on the principle that certain community and infrastructure services are most cost-effectively administered over a larger geographic area. The Region of Peel serves more than one million residents in the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon.
