BRAMPTON - Peel - On Tuesday, September 2, 2008, Peel Regional Police will implement a “Back to School” traffic safety enforcement program to coincide with the return of students to school. Members of Traffic Services, assisted by additional uniform police officers, will commence an educational and enforcement program directed towards the safety of children.
One of our biggest concerns at this time of year is the potential for traffic problems around school zones. In an effort to address these concerns and increase the safety of children, there will be an increased police presence in school zones beginning September 2, 2008. During this campaign the public can expect zero tolerance for drivers who do not comply with traffic laws.
School crossing guards will also be returning to their posts on September 2, 2008 to assist children crossing the roadways. Motorists are reminded to use extra caution and due care in obeying the directions of the guards.
Motorists need to be reminded that children will be in the bus stop areas very early, some before daylight. When a school bus has stopped and has displayed flashing red lights, all vehicles travelling behind, or approaching the bus, must come to a complete stop before reaching the bus. Drivers who do not stop for a school bus with flashing lights can face a $490.00 fine in addition to 6 demerit points recorded on their licence record.
