BRAMPTON - Brampton – Officers from the Major Collision Bureau have arrested a Brampton man in relation to a fatal hit and run collision.
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, at approximately 5:50 a.m., uniform officers responded to several 911 calls for service, regarding a man lying in the westbound lanes of Bovaird Drive East. The victim, Mandeep BHAGTANA, 40 years old and a resident of Brampton, was rushed to hospital. Despite the efforts of ambulance and hospital staff, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
Thanks to several tips from the public, investigators were led to the vehicle involved in the collision. They located the 2005 white Chevrolet Impala in Brampton and discovered the vehicle to be a licensed taxi-cab. The suspect driver was located a short time later and arrested.
Charged with Fail to Remain Cause Death and Careless Driving, is 64 year old Makhan LACHHAR. He has been held pending a bail hearing and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Tuesday, November 18, 2008.
